Appointment of Elaine Moore and deferred business

All council business since June 15 has been delayed indefinitely as Mayor Patrick Brown and his council-four continue to strike to stop the appointment of Elaine Moore. The Ontario Superior Court heard an appeal to overturn Moore’s appointment on Thursday, and is expected to announce its decision on whether the motion was legal under Ontario’s Municipal Act in the coming days.

July 6 will be the last official meeting before council breaks for summer. The agenda includes the forensic audit into the BramptonU project and the mishandling of over $600,000 in funds, as well as other crucial business that is at risk of being delayed for months.

Integrity Commissioner report

The report from City Integrity Commissioner Robert Swayze into allegations of harassment made by former councillor Karen Ras against Ron Starr is being presented to council, recommending Councillor Starr be suspended for 60 days for vandalizing another council member’s vehicle. It’s unclear whether Starr or his lawyers will present their case against Swayze’s report. A lengthy statement released by Starr last week suggested a number of errors in the report.

Immediate action to address opioid crisis

Dr. Kate Bingham, Acting Medical Officer of Health will be presenting on the urgent public health need for a supervised consumption site in the Region of Peel. Supervised consumption sites provide a safe, clean space for people to bring their own drugs to use, in the presence of trained staff.

Bingham is requesting the Commissioner of Health Services, the Chief Financial Officer and Commissioner of Corporate Services be granted authority to establish an interim site in Peel to address the growing number of overdose deaths in the region.

According to the Government of Canada, these sites prevent accidental overdoses and reduce the spread of infectious diseases, such as HIV. Supervised consumption sites offer a range of evidence-based harm reduction services, such as drug checking. The sites also provide access to important health and social services, including substance use treatment for those who are ready.
