20 new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Mississauga Wednesday

On Wednesday, Peel Public Health confirmed 20 new cases of COVID-19, one day after Trillium Health Partners declared an outbreak at Credit Valley Hospital where four patients in one unit tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Mississauga’s number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has risen to a total of 174. On a per capita basis, 2.32 per 10,000 residents, based on a projected Mississauga population of 750,000. Comparatively, with Toronto’s 793 cases, the per capita rate is 2.68 for every 10,000 residents. While the current per capita rate in Toronto is higher than Mississauga — Toronto’s population is also much larger, at 2.9 million people — its numbers suggest the prevalence of the virus amongst Mississauga’s population is similar to Toronto’s population.

Mississauga's number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose by 20 to 174 Wednesday.

During a Wednesday council meeting, Mayor Bonnie Crombie said the City of Mississauga is barricading parking lots at city parks to reduce the number of people using them. The move is part of ongoing efforts to encourage and enforce physical distancing to stop the spread of COVID-19. While playgrounds, outdoor fitness equipment, sport courts, leash-free zones, picnic shelters and skateboard parks are all closed, the warm spring weather has brought people outside in droves.

In a Tuesday press release, the Region of Peel stated that any Mississauga resident who wishes to report gatherings of more than five people, usage of closed, city-owned facilities or a non-essential business for staying open can call 311. City staff, during a Wednesday council meeting, said Mississauga has received 15 such complaints for large gatherings and another 15 for non-essential businesses remaining open.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced contracts with Thornhill Medical, Medicom, and Spartan Bioscience to create ventilators, surgical masks and COVID-19 test kits. Trudeau credited Navdeep Bains, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry and MP for Mississauga-Malton for his role in securing the contracts.

On Wednesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Peel rose by 32 cases to 309.

“Protective personal equipment is essential to protect our health care workers who are on the front lines of this fight,” Trudeau stated during his daily press conference. “We recognize that more is needed and everyone is working day and night to receive essential supplies. We’re coordinating with the provinces and territories, the public health agency and the experts, to make sure our health care workers get everything they need.”
